Meet Morah Sonia

My name is Sonia Hanafin. I was born in Israel and grew up in Kibbutz Ramat David east of Haifa in the North and Central part of Israel.

After high school I went into the Israeli Army for 18 months.  When I finished serving in the Army, I returned home to the Kibbutz and soon after I met my future husband there. He is an American who came to Israel to study Chemistry at the Technion in Haifa and lived in the kibbutz for four years.

We came to the USA and lived in Framingham, then moved to our current home in Marlborough and raised a family. My children, Sean and Michelle, are both married now and I have two grandsons and one beautiful granddaughter.

I am a Hebrew teacher. I taught grades 3 and 5 at Temple Israel of Natick for many years. For most of that time I was the Head Teacher in the Hebrew School.  I have 35 years of experience in Jewish Education teaching children of all ages (Kitah Bet through Gesher B’nai Mitzvah). This includes teaching Hebrew language skills, Holidays, Torah studies and Israel studies. I led school assemblies in Tefilah and Holiday songs and coordinated Shabbat Programs and Workshops for the students and their parents. Several years ago I also taught Adult Education classes in Hebrew including a six week, six session “Hebrew Marathon” course.

I enjoy being involved in Jewish education and teaching about Israel and Jewish culture so that Jewish American youth can develop a stronger connection to their Jewish History and Heritage and a love for the State of Israel.

I am looking forward to a successful and productive school year of teaching, learning and strengthening Jewish education.
