Pirkei Avot, or “Chapters of the Fathers,” is one of the most well-known and oft-quoted of all of the writings of rabbinic Judaism. It is a tractate of the Mishnah (which is part of the Talmud). “Avot,” as it is often referred to, is unique in that it deals solely with ethical teachings and maxims; there is virtually no halacha (law) in it. As a result it is often translated as “Ethics of the Fathers.”
Study and discussion will focus on the moral principles of the tractate, their role in Jewish practice and thought and their application to contemporary issues.
Participants will be asked to purchase one of several modern commentaries on Avot and to prepare selected chapters in advance to maximize active discussion and participation.
I have a list of several modern commentaries of Pirkei Avot, which I’ll share with registrants. Each person will choose at least one, so we will get contributions from a number of commentaries.
Mimimum number of students: 8.
