The Passover Seder is often seen as a way to engage the children at the table in the Passover story.  However, the story and the Seder are about real-life themes and issues such as oppression and liberation.  Too often as adults we don’t take the opportunity to explore these ideas in advance of the Seder because we’re too busy doing Pesach cleaning and then cooking.

This three-part virtual series will provide the space for us to examine the structure and the content of the Haggadah and the Seder. Participants are encouraged to bring a Haggadah or two to the conversation. I anticipate that we will explore sections of the Haggadah such as the four questions, the four children, the Maggid, the role of Elijah, as well as the symbolism of the various Seder foods.  We will also discuss some of the modern rituals that some Haggadot have added into the Seder to add contemporary meanings to the Seder experience.

I am dedicating this series to Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, one of the great teachers of Torah of our time, who died in early November.  I will be bringing his Haggadah into our conversation.

There is no charge for this course. Participants are encouraged to make a contribution to the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund, which supports individuals and families who need a helping hand, as well as Beth Tikvah’s participation in some community programs.
